What is TOEFL?

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers who want to enroll in English-speaking universities, get scholarships, or apply for jobs or visas.

Who administers TOEFL?

TOEFL is developed, administered, and scored by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

When is TOEFL administered?

The TOEFL iBT is administered more than 50 times per year (usually on Fridays or Saturdays) at test centers in 187 countries and territories around the world.

Can I take TOEFL at home?

During Covid-19 Pandemic, TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition has been recently administered in all 187 countries, except Mainland China and Iran.

What does TOEFL cover?

TOEFL covers reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

What is the format of TOEFL?

The format of the test goes like this:

1. Reading (54-72 minutes for 30-40 questions)

2. Listening (41-54 minutes for 28-39 questions)

3. Break (10 minutes)

4. Speaking (17 minutes for 4 tasks)

5. Essay (50 minutes for 2 tasks)

How long does TOEFL take?

TOEFL takes 3 hours to complete, but keep in mind that checking in could take about 30 additional minutes.

What is tested in TOEFL – Reading section?

In Reading section, there are 3 or 4 approximately 700 word academic passages and 10 questions for each passage. The question types are factual information, inference and rhetorical, vocabulary, simplification, insert text, and prose summary.

What is tested in TOEFL – Listening section?

In Listening section, there are 3 or 4 lectures (each 3-5 minutes long with 6 questions) and 2 or 3 conversations (each 3 minutes long with 5 questions). These lectures and conversations are based on the campus language. The question types are gist content, detail, function, attitude, organization, connecting content, and inference.

What is tested in TOEFL – Speaking section?

In Speaking section, there are 4 tasks similar to real-life situations both inside or outside the campus. Task 1 is “independent speaking.” You need to talk about your ideas and experiences in your response. Tasks 2-4 are “integrated speaking.” You need to combine your listening, reading, and speaking skills for these tasks. Your preparation time will be 15-30 seconds, and your response time will be 45-60 seconds.

What is tested in TOEFL – Writing section?

In Writing section, there are 2 tasks. Task 1 is “integrated writing.” You need to read a short passage, listen to a short lecture, and then write your response in 20 minutes. Task 2 is “independent writing.” You need to write an essay, based on your opinion and personal experience in 30 minutes.

What is the score range in TOEFL?

TOEFL score ranges from 0 to 120, with each of the four sections worth up to 30 points. ETS now offers MyBest™ scores by combining your highest available scores in each section of the tests taken within the last two years.

Can I take TOEFL more than once?

Of course, yes. You can take the test more than once, and there is no limit to the number of times you take the test. Except, you cannot take this test more than once in a 3-day period.
